Many massage parlors and spas throughout Taipei offer a pleasant enough environment, with stylish design and soft music, but then pay only lip service to the actual massaging of the customer’s body. I’ve visited plenty of places where the staff gouges my feet or shoulders disinterestedly while waiting for the timer to go off.

I can definitively say this was not the case at Mr. Lin’s 恆仁堂in San Chong. Never before have I had a massage that so expertly focused on the health benefits and treatment of the body. Mr. Lin takes his craft seriously and gave me an experience that defied my expectations and altered my standard for what a massage can be.

Within about 2 minutes of the foot massage, Mr. Lin was making remarkably accurate conclusions about my lifestyle, my job, and my sleeping habits. He also inherently understood the precise pressure to employ for maximum effect and comfort. Often my experiences with massages, especially feet, alternate between painful torture and gentle prodding, both of which raise the question of why I’m paying for the service. But from start to finish, Mr. Lin aptly adjusted his technique, so that not once within the two hours of his work did I ever feel the least bit uncomfortable. Instead, each touch was a soothing release of weeks of built-up tension.

It was clear from our conversations, both during and after the treatment, that Mr. Lin takes a lot of pride in his work and his knowledge. His treatment of his customers like patients, each with their own ailments and needs, both physical and emotional, makes visiting his massage center a must-do activity for anyone who’s worn down by the demands and stress of work and school.

It was a fantastic experience from start to finish, and I highly recommend repeated visits.

Make sure to visit 恆仁堂 at 697 Ren Ai Street in San Chong whenever you have the chance.
